Foundation stone centenary

On 10th June 2007 we celebrated the centenary of the laying of the foundation stone.  The Bishop of Woolwich, the Rt Revd Christopher Chessun, preached at our 10am Mass.  It was also the feast of Corpus Christi so our service finished with the Procession of the Blessed Sacrament to the church garden followed by Benediction.  The Procession included three young members of our Jubilate Choir who scattered rose petals.

In the evening we continued our celebrations with Solemn Evening Prayer.  The choir sang Te Deum and two Anthems: Locus Iste - Bruckner, and I will sing with the Spirit - Rutter.  The same hymns: 'We love the place, O God', 'Blessed city, heavenly Salem', 'In the name which earth and heaven', and 'The Church's one foundation', and Psalm 84 were sung that were used at the service 100 years ago.  Father David gave a short sermon telling us to think back to that day 100 years ago, what the celebrations must have been like, with everyone in their best clothes.  But the next day, the area next to the hall (which was being used for the services) had become a building site and that all churches are really like building sites; the work never finished. We finished the service with a procession outside to the Foundation Stone.
