In the
late 1970's, a then rare - and still unusual - idea was conceived by the
curate, Fr Michael Harding, and his vicar, Fr John Ardley - i.e. to have a church - initiated licensed social
club. Its objects, then as now, include
providing social and recreational facilities for members, and the material and
spiritual development of the parish.
The club came into
being in 1980, constituted as a private members club, and is still run entirely
by volunteers. It took over the
newly-built extension beyond what is now the lounge at the back of the church
hall. In 1992, radical changes to the
layout were made to the lounge and club room, to provide improved kitchen and
toilet facilities, and this is how the building is now configured.
Over the past years,
the club has on the whole been very successful both socially and in providing
from its varied activities substantial sums for essential improvements to the
church hall building, as well as itself, and in supporting the church
financially.
If the idea of our
club sounds interesting to you, do come and see if you like us, we're a
friendly bunch, and you don't have to be a church member. The club is open on Wednesday and Friday
evenings, Sunday lunch times, and most Sunday evenings and Bank holidays. Membership fees are moderate and with
concessions.
Apart from the serious
business of chatting with friends over a drink after a
busy day, you may like to join in the Quiz nights, Karaoke, Darts
competitions, Racing Outings, and other events which are arranged during the
year.
